Colposcopy
Colposcopy – a method of vagina mucous membrane and neck of uterus examination in conditions of additional illumination and optical magnification with the help of colposcope.
In practice, gynecologist usually uses simple and broadened colposcopy with 3-5% acetic acid solution and 2% Lugol's aqueous solution.
Colposcopy investigation helps to identify and differentiate pathologic vagina and neck of uterus processes and also gives an opportunity to watch the dynamics of lower genital region diseases, including ectopia.
Indications for colposcopy:
Colposcopy must undergo each woman during her first visit to a gynecologist, no matter what the reason of the visit is (pregnancy, disease, preventive examination). This examination helps to diagnose precancerous epithelial changes and preinvasive carcinoma stages of neck of uterus; to increase diagnostic possibilities in benign diseases; to analyze the effectiveness of the medical treatment done and control the effectiveness of other treatment plans.
The aim of colposcopy:
- to analyze the conditions of vagina and neck of uterus epithelium;
- to detect the lesion focus;
- to differentiate benign changes from suspicious malignant ones;
- to take smears and biopsy needed.
Modern colposcopes are equipped with video cameras that help specialists in their case monitorings.
